West Virginia’s Drug Abuse Problem

Known for coal mining, caving and scientific research, West Virginia also has approximately 120,000 residents who admitted to a dependence on or abuse of illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year, according to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Of those who were drug- or alcohol-dependent, 36,000 needed but did not receive treatment.

The principal drug concern in the primarily rural state of West Virginia is the abuse and clandestine manufacture of methamphetamine. Marijuana consumption and cultivation, and pharmaceutical drug diversion and abuse come in second and third. At the same time, cocaine, crack and Ecstasy (aka MDMA) are available in most areas of the state.
