An Ongoing Problem for Virginia

The great state of Vermont is thought of as a scenic and beautiful, with its New England heritage, clean air and mountain views. All that charm doesn’t shelter Vermont from the problems of drug and alcohol addiction among its residents. The latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that approximately 53,000 people in Vermont struggled with a dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year. Of those that were drug- or alcohol-dependent, 14,000 admitted they needed treatment for their addiction but never got any help.

Marijuana, domestic and imported, is the most widely abused drug in the state of Vermont, while cocaine is a significant problem throughout the state, particularly in urban areas. Cocaine is readily available throughout Vermont and is widely abused by illicit drug users. There is also widespread availability of heroin in the state of Vermont in street/user level quantities. A typical heroin distributor in Vermont is a heroin user who distributes the drug in order to support his/her heroin addiction. Club drugs like ecstasy also appear to be widely available in Vermont, with several thousand-tablet seizures of MDMA being made at ports of entry into the state. Other popular club drugs like GHB and ketamine don’t seem to be overly popular in Vermont, though.
