It is a fundamental belief at The Canyon that no one deserves to live in pain and despair, or to experience a lasting sense of emptiness and helplessness. Through the awareness of conditions that are affecting the body, mind and spirit, hope and healing return. The professional staff at The Canyon stands ready to help those struggling with co-occurring disorders to arrive at the course of treatment that best suits their individual and family needs.

The Canyon is a state-of-the-art private-pay treatment program housed on 240 beautiful acres near the Malibu coastline. All treatment can be handled on site, from detox to evidence-based residential treatment to aftercare. Our unique program features luxury accommodations and gourmet food as well as a highly trained medical and counseling staff. We customize our program to fit each individual’s needs and focus on getting to the root causes of addiction to ensure a successful and lasting recovery.

Our Healing Life Program is specifically designed to address the multi-faceted issues related to co-occurring conditions. At the core of our program is the desire to help each client develop a positive relationship with his or her self and recognize the barriers that keep them from leading the healthy and fulfilling life they want.

Integrated Treatment Model

Addiction doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Most clients seek help for a substance or alcohol abuse issue, but 99.9 percent of the time there is something else going on that contributes to the problem. It may be a history of trauma or abuse or it could be a mental health issue like depression, anxiety or bi-polar disorder. Our goal through our evidence-based treatment model is to not just stop a client’s self-medicating, but to find out what they are using it mask. We then replace that dangerous behavior with new, healthier tools and coping mechanisms to deal with any existing issues. Whether big or small, addressing these underlying issues gives each individual the best possible chance of success in the treatment process and at long-term recovery.

A History of The Canyon

In 1995, Foundations Recovery Network (FRN) was founded to serve and improve the lives of individuals experiencing difficulties with both substance abuse and mental health issues, and to assist their families in understanding how to cope with their loved one’s struggles. The goal was to fully meet the needs of those with co-occurring conditions, providing integrated treatment services staffed by professionals specializing in both mental health and chemical dependency.

In fall 2003, FRN decided it was time to apply this approach to a world class, state-of-the-art healing center in the beautiful, natural setting of Malibu, and the idea for The Canyon at Peace Park was born. The Canyon opened its doors just nine months later, accepting its first clients in June 2004.

Rehab Success

Canyon staffThe treatment approach was a success from the beginning. Clients who had struggled with multiple relapses and treatment episodes remarked upon completing The Canyon’s program that they had received the missing pieces they needed in order to feel healed, happy and maintain their recovery.

“Our philosophy is, ‘give people enough of what they want in order to get them enough of what they need.’ That’s the balance,” FRN CEO Rob Waggener says. “It’s providing exceptional settings, exceptional food, exceptional comfort and exceptional service so they can focus more specifically on treatment.”

Community at The Canyon

Since opening our doors, The Canyon has continued to expand and refine its program. We regularly host events for professionals and the recovery community featuring respected speakers and authors on spirituality and healing. We have an active alumni program and regular gatherings where alumni return to The Canyon and share their stories and encouragement with clients in treatment.

“No one deserves to live a life of pain and despair,” says Kathleen Bigsby, PhD and director of The Canyon. “I consider this property an oasis for healing and a safe place to take risks, gain new insights and transform pain and fear into hope and self-love.”

The original vision has become a reality through the hard work and effort of many individuals who have been inspired by the idea of what a healing center could be. Their legacy lives on in all that The Canyon continues to accomplish in the lives of those who come here.
