Missouri’s Drug Abuse Problem

Gained by the US from France in the Louisiana Purchase, Missouri played a leading role as a gateway to the West as home to the eastern starting point of the Pony Express and the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. Less laudable is the state’s drug abuse issue. There are approximately 464,000 Missouri residents who admitted to a dependence on or abuse of illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year, according to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Of those who were drug- or alcohol-dependent, 123,000 needed but did not receive treatment.

Mexican drug trafficking organizations are the source of much of the methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and heroin in Missouri. There are also a number of small meth labs throughout the state. Cocaine is plentiful in metro areas, but cocaine-related overdose deaths are decreasing in the St. Louis area. Heroin is also available throughout the state. Club drugs make their way into the state from Los Angeles, New York City and Miami, with everything from Ecstasy to GHB increasingly available in Missouri. Marijuana is also readily available throughout the state, with treatment admissions for pot use having grown approximately 400 percent between 1994 and 2001. This is only exceeded by admissions for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse.
